Sony has just announced the brand new Sony FE PZ 16-35 f/4 G Zoom lens which boasts a compact design with superb optics and a power zoom function which makes it ideal whether you shoot video, stills, or both.
With its 353 grams, this ultra-wide lens is among the lightest in its class while offering a focal length range of 16-35 mm (24-52.5 mm APC-C equivalent) along with a constant aperture of f/4. Let’s take a closer look.
The optical design of the unit features 13 elements in 12 groups, including one ED, one Super ED and four aspherical elements whereas the aperture consists of 7 blades.
Another compelling feature for videographers is the electronically controlled Power Zoom mechanism which enables making smooth zooms during takes, with control possible via the lens body or from select camera bodies.
Furthermore, Power Zoom can be used in conjunction with Sony cameras’ Clear Image Zoom function, which can further extend the effective reach by up to 2x while maintaining near original image quality.
If the lens zoom speed is set to Slow, and the zoom control is performed remotely from the camera body, the zooming transition will be seamless from optical zoom to Clear Image Zoom.
Overall, it seems that Sony has given special attention to the newcomer aiming to achieve consistent and sharp performance throughout the zoom and focus ranges for maximum versatility.
The Sony FE PZ 16-35mm f/4 is also suitable for close-up shooting – the minimum focusing distance at the 16mm position is 11″ and, at the 35mm position, is 9.4″ with a 0.23x maximum magnification.
The dust- and moisture-resistant design, on the other hand, suits working in inclement conditions. A fluorine coating has also been applied to the front element to resist dust, oils, and fingerprints, and to also make cleaning the front element easier.
The lens can accommodate standard 72 mm filters and has a manual aperture ring which can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture settings adjustment.
