When Blackmagic released DaVinci Resolve 17.4, the biggest headlines were about how you would get up to five times the performance on the latest MacBook Pros.
That’s cool, but there was a lot of smaller stuff loaded into the software as well. One example is a quality of life upgrade that allows you to more easily track forward and backward with a single click when using trackers and magic masks.
If you are a Resolve power user and are looking to learn about this new tracker function, you should check out this video from filmmaker Branden Arc. He shows off the old workflow alongside the new one and explains why it is useful.
This new addition to the Tracker window on the Color page and allows you to track forwards and backwards at the same time with a single click. That sounds nice but let’s take a look at what it was like before.
In the old workflow you would create a window, head to the tracker tab, and then hit track forward (if you are at the beginning of the clip). It’ll do the job for you.
If you start in the middle of the clip for a better starting point then you will have to hit track forward, wait for it to finish, head back to your starting point, and then hit track backwards. Fine for some jobs, but can quickly become tedious.
Now, you can do the same thing and start off at a center point, hit the single button to perform both tracks, and then you are good to go. It’s a great improvement.
In more difficult shots you will find this to be a lot more beneficial. These moments will require a lot more care in where you start off from to get an accurate track.
It will let you very easily create a complete track of the whole shot and hopefully get it right the first time around and then have fewer tweaks to get it right.
It’s a nice addition and will make life just a tad better next time you work in Resolve 17.4.
