The brand new iPhone 13 is here bringing more exciting features to filmmakers! Besides the pristine video quality when filming in 4K up to 30fps, you’ll now be able to shift focus on different subjects in your frame to get blurry backgrounds and beautiful bokeh just like using Portrait mode for stills.
The new A15 Bionic chip of the iPhone 13 Pro has enough processing power to create a depth of field effect in Cinematic Mode producing more than impressive results. Just check out the short film shot by director Kathryn Bigelow and DP Greig Frasier below.
Pulling focus can be done both automatically and in a manual mode allowing users to shift focus on the fly with a single tap. You can also lock the focus onto a subject and track it in real-time or even change the effect in post if you need to along with the level of bokeh applied.
Besides Cinematic Mode, the just-announced iPhone 13 Pro will record 10-bit 4:2:2 video using ProRes directly in the Camera app. Both the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max will support this functionality at 1080p 30fps with the 128GB storage option and up to 4K at 30fps with 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB models.
Additionally, the latest iPhone Pro lineup sports three new lenses, equivalent to 77mm at f/2.8, 26mm at f/1.5, and 13mm at f/1.3. Unlike the previous iterations, the telephoto lens now offers a 3x magnification instead of 2x. The ultra-wide lens, on the other hand, offers a whopping 120° field of view plus new options for macro photography.
Other noteworthy enhancements of the iPhone 13 include an all‑new OLED display with ProMotion feature that adjusts the frame rate of your screen from down to 10hz all the way up to 120hz, Ceramic Shield on the front, industry-leading IP68 rating for water resistance, larger battery, redesigned rear camera layout, and much more.
