If you haven’t tried it yet, an external monitor will provide a life-changing experience for shooting video. Being able to get it positioned right where you want it and enjoy features like being bigger and brighter just make video shooting a lot more enjoyable. Still, it will add a lot more gear to your kits, especially if you are going wireless and add some transmitters and receivers.
Videographer Sebastian Savoy has a different solution involving a tablet and a feature that many people probably haven’t even bothered trying out on their a7S III. Even if you do want to stick with a traditional monitor, this will actually give you an option for a client monitor without a serious investment or just having bulky equipment on hand at all times.
Let’s look at what the initial video village area looked like for Savoy’s productions:
- Sony a6300s (now a7S III)
- ANDYCINE A6 monitors
- Hollyland Mars 300 PRO Wireless Video Transmitter
Plus all the requisite cables, batteries, and mounts and this gets fairly sizable.
Now, Savoy did some research into the Imaging Edge Mobile app, which if you used it in the past you might not have been so pleased with. The a7S III also brought some important updates to the app that make it infinitely more useful for video shooting.
The app can provide a quality wireless video feed to a tablet or smartphone and now you can check and change exposure settings, white balance, focus mode, the recording mode, and see remaining time on the cards.
Big is the ability to use tap to focus. Now you can have a partner help with pulling focus or controlling a camera. There’s even room for remote positioning without losing all control over the camera.
If you haven’t tried the Sony app yet now and want to start working with an external monitor this is a perfect opportunity. And if you are going to stick with your traditional monitoring setups, this might just be the perfect extra screen on your next shoot.
Have you ever used the Imaging Edge Mobile app?
