Wireless video monitoring is the latest trend. The main reason being that the technology has just hit a point where it has become very reliable and relatively affordable, making it a viable option for many more people.
Having the ability to wirelessly view footage can help out on set, be it serving as a client monitor to get them (quite literally) off your back, or having it for the director, or even for cameras that are configured or set up in a way where normal monitoring or long cables don’t make sense.
One of the latest in the category is the Accsoon CineEye 2S (and the HDMI-only CineEye 2) and Sidney Diongzon gives it a nice test. Though one of the biggest selling points is that you don’t need a fancy monitor to hook it up, you can have the video stream directly to your phone.
Looking at the two transmitters, the only difference is the CineEye 2S has SDI and HDMI while the base CineEye 2 is only HDMI. Otherwise, all the same:
- Full HD 1080p w/ audio up to 60 fps
- 492’ range with 5GHz Wi-Fi; 60 ms latency
- Transmits to 4 mobile devices
- iOS/Android app w/ recording and monitoring functions
The app has a lot going for it actually, turning your phone into a real monitor. You can even record it to create some dailies to review later. Some great options are found in traditional monitors, such as false colors, zebras, grid, aspect ratios, waveforms, LUTs, and tons more. It’s impressive for an app.
Not needing a receiver and second monitor can pair down your kit. Plus, having the ability to transmit to up to four devices simultaneously should help on a larger set. Everyone can get a view without crowding the camera.
A range of ~500’ is great and appears to be usable in open space. Most people won’t be working at anything close to that, so you should have reliable performance in your everyday shooting situations.
