For all Sony mirrorless shooters out there, Tamron has just expanded its Sony E lens lineup with a couple enticing offerings worth mentioning.
The company has announced two new ultra-zoom lenses – the 150-500mm F/5-6.7 Di III VC VXD along with the world’s first large-aperture F/2.8 ultra-wide-angle zoom lens, the 11-20mm F/2.8 Di III-A RXD for Sony E-mount APS-C mirrorless cameras. Both offerings are now available to pre-order with expected shipping in June 2021.
Tamron 150-500mm f/5-6.7 Di III VXD
The Tamron 150-500mm f/5-6.7 Di III VXD is designed for full-frame-format Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. In a nutshell, the unit is a compact and versatile super-telephoto zoom lens. Its optical construction features 25 elements in 16 groups and utilizes special lens elements and hybrid aspherical lens elements to control chromatic aberrations.
Each element has a BBAR-G2 coating to reduce flare and ghosting for high contrast and color accuracy. The VXD linear motor focus mechanism, on the other hand, delivers extreme high-speed and high-precision movement and ensures exceptionally responsive performance.
The Tamron 150-500mm f/5-6.7 is compatible with Sony Hybrid AF and Eye AF features in enabled cameras. The lens has a minimum object distance of 23.6″ at 150mm end of the zoom range.
The built-in VC image stabilization facilitates shooting handheld at the 500mm ultra-telephoto position, whereas the Arca-type-compatible rotating tripod mount has integrated strap attachment loops for safety and support when shooting in the field.
When used on an APS-C format camera body, the lens will give you a 225-750mm equivalent focal length. The Tamron 150-500mm f/5-6.7 Di III VXD comes with a lens hood which is protected with flexible, shock-absorbing front rim to prevent cracks and damage.
Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 Di III-A RXD
The Tamron 11-20mm F/2.8 Di III-A2 RXD Lens is a fast-aperture ultra wide-angle zoom lens for Sony E-mount APS-C mirrorless cameras. It features the world’s first f/2.8 maximum aperture for Sony E-mount APS-C mirrorless in this category and has a compact and lightweight design.
The optical design incorporates one XLD element, two LD elements, and two glass-molded aspherical elements aiming to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy. The responsive RXD stepping drive motor enables quick, near silent autofocus performance regardless of whether you are shooting stills or video.
The minimum object distance of the Tamron 11-20mm F/2.8 Di III-A is just 5.9″ at the widest end of the zoom range. Additionally, the f/2.8 maximum aperture produces a shallower depth-of-field that creates soft bokeh background details.
Just like its sibling, the unit comes with moisture-resistant construction and a fluorine coating on the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.
The Tamron 150-500mm F5-6.7 Di VC VXD retails for $1,399 whereas the Tamron 11-20mm F/2.8 Di III-A RXD will set you back $829.
