Sony 50mm f/1.2 G-Master Prime Lens Announced

There has always been a high demand for fast quality glass and who else than Sony might address that need better while upping the ante with another enticing release. The company has just rolled out its fastest E-mount lens to date – the 50mm f/1.2 G-Master Prime Lens.

The newcomer features the latest lens technology consisting of 14 elements arranged in 10 groups alongside three XA (extreme aspherical) lens elements and Nano AR Coating II. The notably fast f/1.2 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also affords increased control over depth of field.

The lens also has an 11-blade circular aperture for clean and natural bokeh. Combine these attributes with a minimum focusing distance of 1.3′ and maximum magnification of 0.17x and the unit easily becomes one of the most solid rivals in the segment.

Like past G Master lenses, the FE 50mm F1.2 offers hybrid metal-and-plastic construction to balance weight and durability while providing protection against dust and moisture.

The front element features a fluorine coating to prevent fingerprints, dirt, water, and other contaminants from sticking to its surface. For further convenience and better controlling the light entering the lens, there’s a 72mm filter thread on the front as well.

Balancing the optics is an XD Linear Motor system that uses four separate focusing motors to deliver especially quiet, precise, and quick autofocus performance.

Despite the fact that the Sony FE 50mm F1.2 is designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras, it can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 75mm equivalent focal length.

A focus hold button is featured on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings. The unit also has Linear Response MF (Manual Focus).

The physical aperture ring, on the other hand, can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications.
