As promised and right on time, Sony has announced the brand new Sony FX3. The full-frame camera is Sony’s most compact addition to its Cinema Line. The unit boasts a full-frame back-illuminated 10.2MP Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor and a BIONZ XR processor allowing capturing of UHD 4K video up to 120fps.
The compact and lightweight body design is complemented by multiple accessory threads to facilitate cage-free use. Additionally, the unit can accommodate a detachable, dual XLR/TRS adapter handle for pro audio capture.
Other operating features of the FX3 worth noting include an articulated, touchscreen LCD, multiple autofocus options, over 15 stops of dynamic range, and limited rolling shutter.
Just like the Sony A7S III, the FX3 features 5-axis in-body image stabilization, 16-bit Raw output capabilities, S-Log2 gamma choice and an impressive 80 to 409,6000 ISO range. Unlike its sibling, though, the newcomer provides greater than 1.6x battery runtime as well as USB-PD power option for extended shooting times.
Besides the S-Log2, the FX3 users can pick from S-Cinetone, S-Log3, HLG, and Rec. 709 gamma profiles. The camera allows up to 600 Mb/s XAVC S-I ALL-I H.264 codec recording as well as XAVC HS codec capture with H.265 encoding for lower bit rates in Long GOP.
You can record internal 10-bit 4:2:2 video to CFexpress Type A or SD memory cards or utilize the external, 16-bit Raw, 10-bit 4:2:2 output via HDMI type-A port. There’s also 8-bit XAVC S or 10-bit XAVC HS proxy capture available in case you need it.
Besides that, the unit features phase detection autofocus that covers 89% of the sensor with 627 autofocus points combined with fast hybrid AF, real-time eye AF, and tracking AF.
The Sony FX3 has a 3″ LCD with 1,440,000-dot resolution tilts for optimal viewing. It can be used with or without a cage depending on your personal style of shooting.
The camera sports customizable buttons for assigning 15 controls and up to 140 menu items. There are also easily viewable tally (record) lights located on the top, front, and rear of the body.
An integrated cooling fan and a heat-dissipating design enable uninterrupted 4K recording up to 60fps. The magnesium-alloy chassis and shell are sealed against inclement weather and dust.
The Sony FX3 features dual-band 2.4/5 GHz wireless connectivity as well as an optional wired LAN link using the USB Type-C port and a separate adapter.
