Tamron Announces 17-70mm f/2.8 VC Lens for Sony APS-C Cameras

Popular lens maker Tamron has just announced a brand new lens for Sony APS-C cameras. The all-new 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is a standard zoom lens with an equivalent 25.5-105mm full-frame range which makes it one of the most versatile zoom lenses for Sony’s APS-C E-mount cameras.

The optical construction of the newcomer consists of 16 elements in 12 groups, including two glass-molded aspherical elements and one hybrid aspherical element which are precisely arranged to maintain high-resolution performance from edge to edge.

Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 also offers a close focusing distance of 7.5 inches at 17mm. Even when zoomed to 70mm, the focusing distance expands to 15.4 inches which is still an excellent parameter.

Other than that, the just-announced zoom lens features a moisture-resistant build, fluorine coating on the front element, and 67mm filter size while weighing in at only 18.5oz (524g).

According to Tamron, the built-in Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive (RXD) offers quiet operation which makes the lens ideal for video shooting. Tamron’s VC (Vibration Compensation), on the other hand, provides additional stabilization while shooting even when used at the longer end.

It’s also worth noting that the lens is compatible with many of the features that Sony builds into its cameras, including Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF.

The Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD for Sony E-mount APS-C cameras should hit the market on January 14, 2021, selling for $799.
