Leica just announced the second-generation SL camera featuring 47.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor, Maestro III image processor capable of 10-bit 5K 4:2:0 video recording at 30fps (using H.265 encoding) alongside DCI-compliant 4K60p 4:2:0 video (using H.264 encoding) with 10-bit color sampling. It can also shoot 10-bit 4K30p 4:2:2 video internally as well as up to 180fps when filming in Full HD.
Beyond that, the brand new mirrorless camera offers a dedicated Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) Photo Style mode as well as L-Log gamma profile for greater flexibility in post. Optional 10-bit DCI 4K 4:2:2 (4096 x 2160) up to 59.94fps recording to an external recorder is also possible via the onboard HDMI Type A port.
The Leica SL2 also features an advanced Object Detection AF system, which uses 225 selectable AF areas for fast and accurate performance. Users can also take advantage of the onboard 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization system that significantly improves handheld shooting.
Furthermore, the SL2 offers notable sensitivity ranging from ISO 50-50000, a wide 14-stop dynamic range, and flexible recording modes. The Multishot mode, for instance, allows users to capture and compile eight separate exposures creating a single 187MP raw or JPEG file with a whopping 16,736 x 11,168 resolution.
The camera is also capable of delivering full-resolution continuous shooting speeds up to 20 fps with an electronic shutter, 10 fps with a mechanical shutter, and 6 fps with a mechanical shutter and AF-C, for up to 78 consecutive DNG files.
Other than that, the newcomer sports an updated weather-sealed magnesium-alloy body that includes a new 5.76m-dot EyeRes OLED EVF and a large 3.2″ 2.1m-dot touchscreen LCD. Additionally, there’s a top status LCD for monitoring shooting settings on the fly.
The unit also comes with dual UHS-II-compatible SD memory card slots for flexible image storage, USB Type-C (USB 3.1), a 3.5mm headphone and a 3.5mm microphone jack as well as Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities for wireless file transferring and remote camera control.
