Another day, another teaser from RED. Slowly, but surely, RED SEO Jarred Land continues to spill the beans on the mysterious KOMODO 6K camera module that’s supposed to be a complimentary unit working in conjunction with the RED HYDROGEN smartphones.
A few essential details emerged thus far, even though we still could only guess what the sensor type of the module will be given that it won’t be any variation of the existing Dragon, Helium, Gemini or Monstro sensors already available with the bigger RED DSMC2 cameras as it was officially confirmed by RED. Unfortunately, there’s still no word on the actual size as well as the recording capabilities (besides 6K) and other specs the new offering will have.
What we do know, though, is that KOMODO won’t be larger than 4 inches in any dimension weighing less than two pounds. It’s also confirmed that the tiny camera unit will be using the Canon EOS R mount and it will work closely with the new HYDROGEN Two phones while costing less than $5,000 for all HYDROGEN users.
Besides the non-proprietary CFast 2.0 slot, a headphone jack and a 3.5mm mic input on the front, KOMODO will come equipped with a Lemo DC power in, a single SDI out, a record button and what appears to be dual battery plates on the rear side. That’s at least what we can tell from the recent photo published by Jarred Land on his Instagram account just a few hours ago.

So… as most of you know we are now in the external testing stage of Komodo… will be for the next few months. During prep late last week with one of our favorite teams of course an impossible request comes in which had about a 4% probability of getting done in time. Low and behold… a few dedicated rockstars from the RED engineering team worked around the clock to get it done and they just got it done. I know most of you came here for the pretty picture … but now that I have your attention I wanted to make sure everyone knew just how great the people that make all your RED cameras are. Truly above and beyond. So yeah… I’m stealing this moment to say thank you to my team that keeps on doing the impossible… thank you and carry on.
Apparently, the camera module is in its final testing stages already as the RED team is doing even the impossible to speed up the process and roll out the unit as soon as possible. We can only hope that both KOMODO and HYDROGEN Two will live up to the hype this time. Stay tuned for more details. Official pricing and availability yet to be announced.
