Getting this highly demanded anamorphic cinema look using affordable lenses and adapters turned into a growing trend in recent years. Many innovative companies popped up trying to deliver related high-quality products at an affordable price. One of those companies seems to be the smartphone lens maker Moment with its successfully crowdfunded campaigns referring to multiple lens filters, camera apps, and whatnot.
Now, the Moment team is taking the leap into the unknown by announcing the Moment Air Anamorphic Lens along with some incredibly thin and light CPL and ND filters for drones, and a special smartphone case designed to fit in your drone controller.
Billed as the world’s first anamorphic lens for consumer drones, Moment Air Anamorphic Lens promises to deliver that enticing ultra-wide aspect ratio and juicy horizontal flares without adding a ton of weight to your drone.
According to Moment, the unit is designed to clip right on to either a DJI Mavic 2 Zoom or Mavic 2 Pro using Moment’s new Lock and Balance Mounting System. In a nutshell, the setup has a two-part design with a lens on one side and a counterweight on the other. The two parts clamp together over the drone’s camera, creating a secure lock that doesn’t throw the gimbal off-balance.
The lens will be available in two sizes and it can be purchased alongside new anamorphic ND filters that fit right onto the lens itself. Both versions of the lens specifically designed for the Mavic 2 Zoom and Pro models will retail for $300, but you can still get one with a $100 discount by backing the ongoing Kickstarter campaign.
The proprietary design of the Moment Air Lens minimizes lateral chromatic aberration while using a unique set of coatings to deliver a horizontal flare associated with vintage anamorphics. The anamorphic lens itself is made of aerospace grade composites and metals ensuring that the unit is lightweight enough to fly safely once attached to your drone.
Additionally, if you want to have maximum control over exposure while filming up in the air, you can get the all-new set of anamorphic-specific filters designed for the Air Anamorphic Lens that press fit onto the lens hood for minimal added size and weight.
Again, Moment used aerospace grade aluminum to reduce standard filter weight by 10%, making these the lightest filters available for Mavic 2 drones. All six pieces use multiple optical coatings and are made from cinema glass to ensure the highest image quality possible.
Considering the fact that the initial goal of $100,000 on Kickstarter was successfully raised in less than four hours, it’s probably safe to say that the Air Anamorphic Lens will indeed hit the market according to plan in November later this year.
