Voigtlander is one of the most legendary lens makers in the world of photography with a lineage that goes back more than a century. About a year and a half ago, the legendary Austrian lens maker announced the Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f1.4 lens for Sony E mount and now they are expanding with an even wider Voigtlander 21mm f/1.4 lens for Sony mirrorless cameras.
Just like the rest of the Voigtlander lineup, the new 21mm f/1.4 has a solid metal built – the Voigtlander’s are known for their all metal construction and of course the manual focus.
The very bright f1.4 aperture and 12 blade aperture is bound to deliver some beautiful images and of course, the 21mm f1.4 has been designed to cover the latest digital full-frame 35mm sensors making it perfect for the new Sony A7 III or the Sony a9.

The Voigtlander Nokton 21mm f/1.4 may just be the perfect an ultra-wide prime for those seeking that old-school metal lens feel and focusing by hand. The Voigtlanders are generally known to be a bit soft wide open, but some say that’s part of their charm. At 560 grams, the 21mm f1.4 is a beast too, but then again it’s a 21mm ultra-wide prime with a fast f1.4 aperture, so the ton of glass inside and metal housing contributes to the weight.
They are generally solid lenses for video use as well since the lens offers a de-clickable aperture ring with smooth increments, thanks to what Voigtlander call – Selective Aperture Control System.
The lens’ advanced optical design features a pair of aspherical elements and three partial dispersion elements, which, together, help to suppress both spherical and chromatic aberrations for greater sharpness, clarity, and colour rendering. A floating elements system is also employed to maintain consistent image quality throughout the focusing range.
