UK production company Wise Guys recently teamed up with Atomos and Panasonic for a short film, shot on-location in just two and a half days with minimal cast and crew.
“Tuning” was shot on the Panasonic S1 in Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) profile in 4K 10bit 4K 4:2:2 direct to Apple ProRes on the Ninja V. At the moment, the Panasonic/Lumix S1 shoots internally only in Long-GOP, so getting the 4K stream out of the camera into the Atomos recorder where it would be recorded as industry-standard Apple ProRes helped capture the maximum from the camera and make it easier in the grade.
The Atomos Ninja V has some of the best overall image tools and display enabling users to accurately view HLG HDR, which helped the Wise Guys team to accurately see their images on-set in real-time and figure out exactly how they would look in post-production. The full range of focus and exposure tools on the Ninja V also aided in perfecting the shots.

The Panasonic S1 is definitely capable of producing stunning images, and given that all modern mirrorless cameras are pretty much the same in terms of a decent baseline 4K image, having a full-frame sensor and 4K HDMI output can still benefit your workflow when paired with a capable external recorder such as the Atomos Ninja V.
