Sony just announced the RX0 II, the successor to their “ultra-compact” rugged, action-like RX0 camera. One of the biggest complaints with the previous model was the lack of 4K internal recording options. The predecessor Sony RX0 could only output 4K via HDMI to an external recorder. Well, the new Sony RX0 II remedies that with 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) up to 30fps internal recording in the XAVC-S codec at 100Mbs onto a microSDXC card. S-log2 on-board is also available in addition to a 4K UHD output via HDMI.
In addition to the internal 4K recording, which nonetheless is a very welcomed improvement, the RX0 II also gets a 180-degree tiltable LCD screen (can also tilt downward 90 degrees) for all your selfie and vlogging needs. At least that’s Sony’s plan – to get this camera into the hands of vloggers.
The newly announced Sony RX0 II gets a 1.0-inch stacked 15.3-megapixel Exmor RS CMOS sensor and an advanced BIONZ X image processing engine for enhanced colour reproduction. The lens is a fixed ZEISS Tessar T* 24mm f/4 wide-angle lens has a shortened minimum focusing distance of 20cm.
In addition to the 4K/30p internal recording (with full pixel readout and no pixel binning) the RX0 II also utilizes an in-body electronic image stabilization to help you get smoother shots when vlogging or running around with the camera. Super-slow motion up to 960fps/1000fps is also possible, but at diminishing resolutions, the most useful of which hover around the 120/100fps mark, which if you are familiar with the other 1.0-inch sensor cameras from Sony, ain’t bad at all.
The RX0 II retains the same compact and rugged form factor as the predecessor and weighs at just 132g. The RXo II is water-proof up to 10 meters, dust-proof, shock-proof up to 2 meters and also offers a crush-proof protection of forces up to 200 kg.
