Photokina 2018: Insta360 Pro 2 and Sennheiser Memory Mic

Insta360 made a few big announcements recently, such as their new Insta360 ONE X 360-degree action camera, the Insta360 Pro 2 8K VR camera, and also the upcoming 180-degree 3D upgrade to the Pro 2 and Pro cameras. At Photokina 2018, Insta360 had a very busy stand with all their products and were doing some impressive VR demos with show attendees.

I had a chance to speak with Max from Insta360 about their more professionally oriented Insta360 Pro 2 camera and some of the latest technologies and innovations they have implemented into the 8K VR camera and its workflow.

The Insta360 Pro 2 is ready to shoot 8K-per-eye 3D 360-degree video and features the company’s hugely impressive FlowState built-in image stabilization; available shooting video modes include 8K/3D at 30fps, (normal 2D) 8K monoscopic at 60fps, 6K/3D at 60fps, and 4K 3D at 120fps, among others.

To preserve dynamic range, the Insta360 Pro 2 uses in-camera HDR that keeps lighting natural even when it varies in every direction. In addition, there is also a flat gamma profile called i-Log mode, which has been optimized for maximum flexibility in post-production giving cinematographers more control over the images when colour grading your high resolution VR footage.

The Sennheiser Memory Mic was another interesting bit of kit I saw at Photokina and had a quick chat/interview with Robb from Sennheiser about the features of their tiny mic designed for mobile content creators, and just about anyone using a mobile device to capture video.

The Sennheiser Memory Mic is a compact and lightweight mic that offers excellent sound and works at any distance from your smartphone; once synced, since it records the audio internally. Then you can easily sync the audio with your smart device with the Sennheiser app (available for both iOS and Android devices).

The Memory Mic is equipped with a high-quality condenser microphone capsule with omni-directional patterns that ensures precise sound pick-up.

The operating time of the microphone is rated at up to 4 hours and while it would take about 2 hours to do a full re-charge of the integrated lithium-polymer battery via the USB, you can get up to 70% in an hour.
