So, you may recall the ARRI CPO program that ARRI launched a few months back to give up and coming DPs an opportunity to own arguably the measuring stick camera in the world of cinematography – the ALEXA Classic and some of its later models all while getting some peace of mind as opposed to shelling 12 grand on eBay and then getting a useless door prop.
Initial offerings were few, however recently the ARRI Certified Pre-Owned Program has seen some new (used) Alexa XT Plus and Alexa 4:3 XR additions, which cost about twice as much as the OG Classic EV, but give users advanced functionality such as 4:3 and Open Gate modes, as well as the ability to use Codex XR capture drives.
As a reminder, as part of the program, pre-owned and refurbished camera systems of the ALEXA range carry the official stamp of approval of ARRI, meaning you get a camera that has been tested and re-calibrated by ARRI engineers. Plus you get a whole year worth of warranty for additional piece of mind.
And even more recently, as part of a new initiative to help filmmakers, and encourage camera owner-operators/rental companies to upgrade their aging ALEXA Classics to the more modern ARRI AMIRA with a Premium License.
ARRI calls their latest program the Trade-In/Trade-Up Program and in essence gives owners of ALEXA Classic/Plus cameras the option to trade their Classics and/or Alexa Plus cameras in for a credit of up to €11,000 Euros, which is about $13,000 USD off the price of a new ARRI AMIRA Premium (currently priced at around $46,000 in the US and/or £38,000 inc VAT in the UK).
The current offer also includes special deals on ARRI Master Grip sets, with up to three Cforce lens motors.
The AMIRA Premium gives cinematographers a really robust and versatile camera with an ergonomic design ideal for smaller crews and is easy to use on the shoulder. In addition to delivering ARRI’s superb picture quality, it comes with a preloaded Look Library with 30 LUTs and shoots up to 200 fps slow motion and includes a license for 4K UHD.
The AMIRA records onto CFast 2.0 cards and features build-in XLR inputs making it the perfect tool for cinematic documentaries and events.
If Raw is your thing, fret not, as the ARRI Amira can now capture ARRIRAW 2.8K up to 48fps thanks to SUP 5.3 (it does require a paid license tho) – check out our post about it here.
The ARRI Master Grips are sophisticated tool sets for the remote control of the camera and lenses. In conjunction with cforce motors they can be used to move the geared rings of any standard lens quickly and smoothly, and compliment the AMIRA perfectly.
