Sony’s presser for NAB 2018 is on right now but their FS5 II videos have already been posted on their youtube channel. In all honesty, this is a very small, incremental update even less than what the FS7 II was to the FS7. So, for those of you waiting for a Full-Frame chip, or some revolutionary new on board raw codec, this is not the camera for you.
The FS5 II has some new colour science designed to improve the already existing picture profiles, the usual Sl0g2 and Slog3 HDR compliant LOG profiles, and a new 4K/120fps in a… (wait for it) 4 second burst to an external recorder in Raw. Same sensor, S35, same XAVC-L LONG GOP codec, 240fps in 2K Raw OUT only to external recorders, same electronic built-IN ND filters (which is awesome), same SD cards media, same body (except for a black painted ND filter knob, wow, you really outdid yourselves there Sony….) and no need for external licenses.
With the FS5 – the Raw output was a paid for license, not the case with the FS5 II.
So in Summary FS5 II gives you:
- 4K/60 and 50 – Raw output only External recorder
- 4K/30p – internal XAVC-Long GOP
- 4K/120fps in a 4 second burst – Raw to external rec
- 2K/240fps continuous to external Raw recorder
- Full HD /120fps continuous internal
- No more licenses needed for Raw or otherwise
- Built-in Electronic ND filters (from FS5)
- New Colour Science
- Better Highlights/Better tonality
- Price – $4750 at B&H
Here is a really informative video from Alvaro Ortiz telling you all you need to know about the new FS5 II. Thanks for sending this video to us over Twitter, Alvaro!
