New Panasonic EVA1 Spotted in Iceland, First Footage Coming Soon!

Yesterday, I shared an image I found on Panasonic ProAV’s twitter feed, depicting what appears to be a pre-production version of the new Panasonic AU-EVA1 5.7K camcorder in the hands of Filippo Chiesa, a very talented Italian DP, somewhere in gorgeous Iceland. This coincides with what Mitch Gross stated on the DVXUser.com forum, that indeed Panasonic are moving forward with creating the first official images out of the EVA1. This is very exciting news, indeed. No word yet on when the first official footage from the camera will be released, but I can’t imaging Panasonic delaying it too much. My guess is within two weeks time, we will probably see it.

Yup, we’re beginning to create some content. EVA1 is alive. We’ll have information soon and footage a little later. – Mitch Gross, Panasonic

The EVA1 appears to be kitted with the Zacuto VCT-Pro baseplate, and the Gratical HD EVF.

The lenses are re-housed Zeiss Distagons by LockCircle, which also make the Robot Skin cage for the Panasonic GH5 (pictured below mounted on a compact gimbal, presumably the Zhyiun Crane). The GH5 is presumably a B-camera or a behind the scenes go-getter.

According to Mitch Gross, Cinema Product Manager at Panasonic, the Panasonic EVA1 will be supplied with the following accessories when it is made available for sale in the Fall:

  • Camera body
  • Top handle
  • Side grip
  • LCD with mount
  • Microphone mount
  • 1 x battery
  • 1 x dual-slot charger/power supply

Pricing has not yet been confirmed, however WexPhotographic, a major UK photo/video equipment reseller, have a pre-order page for the EVA1 and have posted a price of £8,999 GBP inc. VAT (£7,499 + 20% VAT). Even with the import duty and VAT this is pretty high considering the the sub-$8,000 price tag Panasonic are aiming for according to the pre-launch presentation at CineGear 2017 last month.

Interesting move from Wex, given that neither the US nor the UK MSRP has been officially announced, but maybe they know something we don’t. We shall wait and see; after all, IBC 2017 is just around the corner is about six weeks time and change in mid-September.

I do hope we get a chance to see official footage from the EVA1 well before IBC 2017, which will give people interested in buying the camera enough time to evaluate their potential purchase.

So, what’s the consensus on the EVA1? Does it have a lot to live up to? Do let me know me know your thoughts in the comments below.

I’d say it’s been a while since Panasonic have been hyping a new product this much, which naturally brings more pressure on them to deliver. Let’s hope that whatever, Filippo (and other very talented shooters) achieve with the EVA1 is worth the wait.
