Metabones just announced brand new CINE style (locking type) EF to E Speed Booster ULTRA and Smart Adapters for those planning on using Canon EF lenses on the new Sony FS7 II.
The innovative optical adapters maker also announced revised versions of the current EF to E Speed Booster ULTRA and Smart Adapter. Metabones announced a total of 4 new adapters – EF to E CINE Smart Adapter, EF to E CINE Speed Booster ULTRA, EF to E Smart Adapter V and EF to E Speed Booster ULTRA II.
You can see the product codes below, as with Metabones adapters it can get really confusing as to which adapter does what and what is the correct manufacturer code associated, so for that please refer to the list towards the bottom of this article.
The standout new feature of the two new CINE style adapters – the EF to E CINE Speed Booster ULTRA and EF to E CINE Smart Adapter, is a positive-lock EF lens mount ported over from the highly acclaimed Metabones EF-FZ CINE Smart Adapter that many Sony F5/F55 owners have praised.
The new locking mechanism on the lens side makes the CINE style Speed Booster for Canon EF lenses a perfect companion to the positive-lock mount of the new Sony FS7 Mark II camera.
Sadly, this means that the current EF to E Speed Booster (MB_SPEF-E-BT2) and Smart Adapter Mark IV (MB_EF-E-BT4) won’t work on the new FS7 II because of the new locking style E-mount on the camera. Whether the new CINE style Speed Booster Ultra and CINE Smart Adapter will work with the original FS7 or Sony FS5 for example is yet to be confirmed/tested.
Highlights of New Features
- CINE models feature a new positive-lock EF lens mount. (Patent pending)
- Rubber gasket protects E-mount connection from dust and moisture (all new 4 models).
- Compatible with Sony FS7 Mark II camera (all new 4 models).
- Status notification LED light
- Dedicated switch controls in-body image stabilization (IBIS)
All 4 new adapters are equipped with a rubber gasket to protect the E-mount connection to the camera from dust and moisture. A built-in LED indicates the adapter’s operation mode, optical image stabilization operation and comms status.
There is also a new dedicated switch controls in-body image stabilization (IBIS) on Sony cameras equipped with built-in image stabilization such as the Sony a6500.
The new EF to E CINE Speed Booster ULTRA and EF to E Speed Booster ULTRA II feature the same world-renowned Speed Booster ULTRA optics by Caldwell Photographic and WB Designs that make lenses brighter with 1 stop, and 0.71x wider and also sharper.
The new CINE Speed Booster ULTRA will be priced at $699 upon release next month, whereas the CINE Smart Adapter will be selling for $449. There is no pricing yet available on the revamped Smart Adapter V (Non-Locking type) and EF-E Speed Booster ULTRA (Non CINE locking type).
