How to Create the Star Wars Feathered Wipe Transition Effect in Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2017

The latest Star Wars movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has been crushing it all over the world lately. And, if you still haven’t got a chance to see it, we highly recommend it. Meanwhile, I’m sure that most of you are quite familiar with the feathered wipe transition effect that can be spotted in every single film of the epic saga.

The good news is it can be easily created in Premiere Pro CC 2017 and shouldn’t take you more than a couple of minutes to complete. So, if you want to add some light magical energy to your shots, the following video tutorial produced by AdobeMasters shows how you can easily pull off this classic Star Wars transition that has certainly become an icon of the franchise over the years.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to produce the effect by using only the standard Wipe Effect that can be found in Premiere Pro CC 2017 transitions’ list as it simply doesn’t provide the required level of control. To get the feathered wipe transition, you should utilize the Linear Wipe located in the Transition subfolder of Video Effects instead. In order to make this work, you should also create a couple of keyframes along the line.

To start off, slide the second clip under the other just like shown in the above video so that both pieces overlap and then drop the Linear Wipe on the upper clip. Place the play head on the starting point of the transition, set the Transition Completion to 0% and create a keyframe. Then, scrub to the end point where you want your transition to be completed and set the value of the Transition Completion to 100%. The latter step should automatically add another keyframe thus creating the actual wipe transition between the two clips.

To wrap this workflow up, tweak the Feather parameter by setting its value between 60 and 120 to get the final result. You can also experiment with the Wipe Angle to customize the transition even further. Alternatively, you can utilize the Radial Wipe in a similar way. The basics of this workflow are identical so play around and see what other creative results you can get.
