The Sony NXCAM range of camcorders including the NX5 and NX3 have been quite popular with event videographers and self shooters for quite sometime, and earlier today Sony announced the latest addition to the range – the new HXR-NX5R, bringing modern Sony innovations such as a multi-interface shoe, WiFi/NFC and FTP capabilities to the lineup. The new Sony NX5R model replaces the NX3/5 models and features 3 x 1/2.8-type Full HD Exmor CMOS sensors delivering stunning Full HD images at up to 50 frames per second in 1080p. The maximum frame rate for the NTSC model is 60p, however in Europe, we will be selling the PAL model, which has a maximum of 50p. 40x Clear Image Zoom will deliver crisp images without perceived loss of quality, expanding further the 20x optical zoom.

The 3G-SDI can output 1080/60p and the NX5R is Multi-Interface Shoe equipped – ensuring compatibility with cable-less audio systems like the Sony UWP-D11 audio system. Videographers shooting events and concerts will love the built in WiFi and FTP connectivity allowing them to LiveStream directly from the camera. Dual SD card slots enable continuous and back up recording as well for added peace of mind.
Similar to the recently announced Panasonic AG-AC30, the NX5R has a small built-in LED light right into the top handle to help boost light levels and act as an on-camera light for ENG interview setups.
Much like the Sony A7s, the NX5R features the same 108op 8bit 4:2:0 XAVC-S 50Mbps codec in addition to the older, but established AVCHD/DV codec for easier integration with legacy workflows. Just like other NXCAM camcorders before it like the NX3, the new NX5R uses the affordable and very popular L-series NP-F style batteries.
The Sony HXR-NX5R is expected to ship in late September for around $3700 USD. Sure, it may lack UHD/4K recording, a 1-inch chip like the Z150, or super-slow motion, but at least on paper, the NX5R sounds like an interesting Full HD solution for event/wedding shooters looking for a quick and easy, out-of-the-box solution for their productions.
