Sony Joins the SSD Consumer Market with Its First 240GB and 480GB Drives

It seems that the Japanese technological giant is trying to explore some new business opportunities by entering the consumer SSD market with its latest solid state drives which will be the first models released outside of Japan. Finally, the SLW-M series will get an international roll-out supposedly as another reasonably priced solution in the entry-level SSD segment. In essence, the SSDs are 2.5-inch drives supporting SATA 3.0 and will initially come in two sizes – 240GB and 480GB.

Regarding performance, users can expect up to 560MB/s sequential read speeds and up to 530MB/s sequential write speeds. Each drive boasts a 7mm slim design, 128 MB DDR3 buffer memory and comes equipped with the Acronis True Image 2015 and Sony SSD ToolBox software for managing and saving user’s data. For instance, the  System Clone function of the Acronis True Image 2015 HD app can help you easily backup your entire data including your operating system and applications from your PC to Sony’s SSD. Whereas the Sony SSD Toolbox provides the ability to check the drive information and status like model name, capacity, firmware version, serial number and lifespan.

It’s reported that the SLW-MG2 (240GB) and SLW-MG4(480GB) drives feature a Phison S10 series controller along with Toshiba’s TLC NAND flash memory. The drives will also come with a 9.5mm spacer for those that need the adapter for notebooks with upgradeable drive bays. On top of that, the manufacturer is providing a 3-year warranty on the SSDs.

The exact pricing and availability in North America and Europe, however, are yet to be announced. There is no information if smaller or larger storage options will be available in the future, but for now, these are the only two sizes that you can choose from.

Presumably, we’ll see more variations of the SLW-M Series if Sony manages to provide aggressive price tags for the existing models. Considering the fact the entry-level SSD market is already highly saturated, it will be interesting to see whether Sony will manage to stay ahead of the pack in a market segment where there is already stiff competition and similar products can be found at an affordable price.
