Just days after the beta version release of the highly anticipated AtomOS 6.4 firmware update to anxious Sony FS700 owners, Atomos just released the firmware in question to the public – and it is the biggest firmware update to date for their 4K Shogun recorder (and pretty sweet monitor). The latest firmware update comes as usual at no extra charge and is packed with new features – the big ones being of course – the Sony FS700/FS7 Raw to 4K ProRes/DNxHR up to 30p. It’s worth to note at this point, that Sony FS7/FS700 Raw to 4K CinemaDNG is not yet enabled in this firmware and will come at a later point as per Atomos’ statement from last week when they mentioned “it is about 98% done”. I know this is a feature that FS7 and FS700 owners have been banging on about since the dawn of time, and hopefully Atomos will deliver soon on their promise.
Credit where credit is due, they did officially release v6.4 before end of June, which is today so kudos to them for that.
Other notable updates in firmware v6.4 are – Anamorphic de-squeeze, which Panasonic GH4 shooters will love, an option to apply monitoring LUT to another monitor, time-lapse, and pre-roll recording. Notable addition is the V-log to Rec.709 LUT pre-empting the imminent release of the much awaited V-Log Lite for the GH4 (Come, on Panasonic release it already, we know it’s done!).

3. Pre-roll recording (up to 8s in HD and 2s in 4K)
4. Custom time lapse recording – Keyframe
5. LUTs able to be applied on output, in recording, on screen & split screen
6. Playlist generation of all clips on the disk, user selected clips, cut edited favourite clips or a combination of both.

8. Genlock activated for synced playback and play-out in Genlock environments
“We have unleashed thousands of dollars of value for free,” says Jeromy Young CEO and co-founder of Atomos. “Features like RAW transform the FS700 from a HD camera to a 4K camera with accurate colors and real conversion to REC709 for the best ProRes and DNxHR recording, the Anamorphic de-squeeze adds even more functionality to the Panasonic GH4, Playlist converts the Shogun into an affordable play out server on set and time lapse gives a creative edge to all of our users in the field.”
The AtomOS6.4 update is available for free download from www.atomos.com/support. The features added to the Shogun are included here in full;
1. FS700 & FS7 4K-DCI RAW to ProRes/DNxHR record
Users can take the RAW 4K-DCI feed from the SDI output on the Sony FS7 and FS700 and record direct to 4K-DCI ProRes or DNxHR. The linear RAW feed can be recorded as Slog2, Slog3 or Rec709 and can support 24/25/30p resolution. For the army of FS700 users in the field this is the feature they have been waiting for, converting their HD camera into a 4K powerhouse.
2. Anamorphic de-squeeze for 2x, 1.5x, 1.33x and the specific Panasonic 8:3 mode support
Anamorphic was one of the key trends from this year’s NAB, led by a mass of new anamorphic lenses and the announcement from Panasonic to add anamorphic squeeze to their popular GH4 camera. With this update the Shogun can de-squeeze an anamorphic image from 2x, 1.5x, 1.33x and Panasonic 8:3 modes. Another reason to add GH4 with Shogun
3. Pre-roll recording of 8s HD, 2s 4K
With pre-roll activated the Shogun is continually cache recording – up to 8s for HD and 2s for 4K. Perfect for capturing action sports or long wildlife shoots, ensuring you always get the shot even if you hadn’t hit record yet. Works in all modes including RAW.
4. Custom time lapse recording
One of the most creative features added is video time lapse. With this feature users have complete control over their unique time lapse style with the ability to adjust the number of frames, time between capturing the next frame, total record time and clip playback length. The user interface has been well thought through to make the process easy and with the ability to set multiple steps, add a smooth transition and even schedule the recording time, capturing the perfect time lapse sunset is now a much easier task.
5. LUTs able to be applied on output, in recording, on screen and split screen
Since February, Shogun users have been able to upload their own LUTs in a “.cube” file format to review and measure the effect on the monitor before recording. Now in OS6.4, additional LUT capability has been added with the ability to view the LUT on the output, on the screen, bake it in the recording and even view in half screen mode to see the direct result of the LUT on the final image.
6. Expanded meta data tagging
We have expanded the meta data capability of the Shogun to allow for on the fly tagging wither during recording or during review in playback. The 10 meta data tags available (Favorite, Reject, Talent 1, Talent 2, Over Exposed, Color Correct, Bad Audio, Cut Away, Close up, Wide shot) allow for key word search in FCPX and can be transferred across to Adobe and AVID using readily available online tools.
7. Genlock activated
The Genlock terminal on the back of the Shogun has been activated to allow for synchronised playout and playback.
8. Playlist generation
The ability to record, playback and review quickly on set has been an integral feature of Shogun and now with playlist functionality the process for reviewing rushes and favourite scenes on set is easier than ever. Play all movies in recorded order, or hand select a playlist for playback in any order – either your choice of multiple clips, just the Favorite sections of a clip or a combination of both. This functionality makes the Shogun one of the most affordable 4K play out server solutions available on set.

so every week a new news from atomos published. is that the magic thing that will save us ??
why you guys are covering atomos and publishing sucking newa about miserables updates like a new product. this is not professional
Really?!? You’re kidding right? Its a substantial update that a lot of people need and the whole point of the Shogun is that it constantly evolves with new updates. It’s a bit of a shame to call it “a miserable update”… Our job is to post news such as firmware updates we deem interesting and useful to our reader base. It’s not just about brand new products.
Really ten times, simply tell me in the last 2 moths, How many publish about Atomos ? a lot, and how many about the others (Convergent Design, Cinemartin) ??
Substantial update is like go for 4K60P like they said, obviously they can’t, neither .. the other is like the news about the firmware for sony a7s, another miserable news
Don’t offense, its my opinions, News are news not minor updates, again tell me how many news. The upgrades, the DUAL Atomos, the now atomos announce SUCK support to new cameras (that even are not on the market), yes, and youu published about..oaaooawww, oooo yes ooo now Atomos announces support for new Sony A7 A7RII RIII RIIIIIIIII cameras, this sucks, as all the recorders support all the pro cameras, so was not good to publish such scenarios. Do you want more.. Whats happended with the announce of Cinemartin saying NEXT it also support USB cameras, and what about the in depth (2nd video ) by Alister, and what about vid.eus (did’nt you get the PR)… too much for the biggers, almost grain for the minor ones.. thats not good..
My Opininon
I got the vid.eus PR before you, but dont think that that’s the only news out there. If you don’t like what we post, you don’t have to read us. You’re not forced to do so, there’s plenty of other sites you can frequent.
If you publish, until some weeks, very well, 1 or 2 poast per days, gives me the habit to say hey now check out 4K shooters, and I think Im not the only one. But when I read and see often so many times a same product.. this is what i dont like it .. and this is why my heart force to say my opinions.. Rememebr that world is as is due to the big economy.. the biggers are destroyng the smallers, and thats another history.. but again, I said all I think I need to say. That Im not happy to see repetivealy the same brand/product over and over again on 4K
Best regards
Your feedback is appreciated. I would have preferred that you employ a less abrasive and aggressive tone, as I don’t think that we deserve such abuse. You could have been nicer. Hope you have a good day. Don’t sweat these things so much, there’s more important things in life than gear and news surrounding it.
This is sometimes my fault, abrasive, like now on the summer.. too much aggresive, Im sorry for, I hope you note this feedback, with a bit of salad
Cheers
