Samsung NX1 Firmware 1.2 Adds 23.98/24p in 4K UHD, Adjustable Audio Levels and Gamma Curves

Earlier in January, we posted about the rumoured new firmware update for the 4K Samsung NX1, and now that firmware update is a reality. Samsung just released firmware update 1.2 for the NX1, which adds some significant features to the camera such as 23.98, and 24p in UHD and 1080p, as well as adjustable audio levels during recording. Image control functions such as C Gamma and D Gamma will aid with getting a more grade-able image in post. The Samsung NX1 firmware version 1.2 update had already been demonstrated on the company’s booth at the current CES 2015 trade show floor in Las Vegas earlier in January.

Movie mode:

  • Audio levels adjustable during movie capture
  • ISO adjustable during movie capture
  • 23.98p and 24p frame rates for 4K UHD and 1080 video
  • ‘Pro’ movie quality setting added for 1080p capture
  • Wider range of display options, including gridline, centre, aspect ratio and action-safe area markers
  • Output time code over HDMI (for use with external recorders)
  • C Gamma and D Gamma curves added for movie shooting
  • Master black level
  • Luminance level limiting [0-255], [16-235], [16-255]
  • AF speed control for smoother refocusing (3 settings)
  • AF responsiveness control (dictates camera’s readiness to change AF subject)
  • Added tools for selecting and grabbing frames from video

Physical interface changes:

  • Autofocus lock option in movie mode (if set to AEL button)
  • AF/MF toggling in movie mode (AF ON button option)
  • Wi-Fi and [REC] buttons’ functions can be swapped
  • AF On and AEL buttons’ functions can be swapped
  • Command dials’ direction of operation can be reversed
  • Add ISO or Exposure Comp. to command dial (customizable per PASM mode)
  • DoF Preview and Delete buttons customizable
  • Auto ISO options (ISO, ISO Customizing, Minimum Shutter Speed) arranged together in menus

Wireless features:

  • Smartphone App can operate as remote release using Bluetooth
  • ‘Quick Transfer’ to automatically send thumbnails to a smartphone as they’re shot
  • Pair with multiple smart devices
  • Check for firmware updates over Wi-Fi

Other additions:

  • Trap Shot feature – fires shutter when a subject crosses a specified guideline
  • Samsung Remote Studio for thethered shooting from Windows PC
  • Samsung to release SDK for Windows to allow independent remote control software creation

With the release of the beast of a firmware update, which you can download here – about 280MB zip file, adding the above features, NX1 shooters are already eager to try out the new features. Here’s a video by Arthur Taylor shot with firmware 1.2:

There’s an interesting discussion over at DVXUser about the possibility of the MagicLantern community getting involved with the NX1. A link to a private thread on the ML forums was posted (not accessible publicly) which opened the discussion of a possible 2K raw downsampling to internal SD cards, something which may or may not be possible, but regardless will help a lot with the rolling shutter at 4K, and make the NX1 even more awesome.

Let’s just hope that happens. We’ll keep you in the loop as to further developments with regards to that. I am really starting to like the NX1 more and more after this update and with the possibility of a “mini-NX1” coming soon in the form of the NX500 with 2.5K recording on board (fingers crossed) makes the offer even more tempting.
